WHO WE ARE

Mirador Magazine is an adaptive-text publication that makes reading easier for people with a dementia diagnosis. Mirador addresses the surprisingly large gap of accessible reading materials for this community — something co-founder Nikki discovered after trying to find a magazine for her late Aunt Rebecca, who had been diagnosed with Young Onset Alzheimer’s at the age of 63 in 2016.

In early 2018, Nikki sought the graphic talents of bandmate Tavé to help with research and design for a new kind of publication created for people who were having trouble reading traditional magazines. Adding the talent of layout designer Tay Juncker rounded out the team.

Mirador's first issue was published in June 2021. Since that time, Nikki and Tavé (who became a co-founder) learned that Mirador is useful for other communities: people recovering from stroke or other brain trauma, those with non-neurotypical brains, or people experiencing other visual or cognitive issues. The ad-free pages display an easy-to-read format, engaging imagery, and large print text. Finally, Mirador is not a magazine “about” dementia — the positive stories and activities feature nature, history, nostalgia, travel, cooking, and interviews with people doing the things they love.

While Mirador has been available to readers since the beginning in the United Kingdom, we are thrilled to be printing here now, thanks to a partnership with Softwood Books and Gipping Press, Ltd. This allows the magazines to be purchased at a lower rate than was previously allowed when coming from the States.

We look forward to building relationships with our new families across the pond and encourage you to reach out if you have any questions or comments at all. Email: info@miradormagazine.com

  • Nikki Jardin

Nikki Jardin is MIRADOR's Co-Founder and Behind-The-Scenes gal. She has meandered down a variety of paths throughout her life, resulting in a somewhat haphazard but ultimately rewarding work history. • Tay Juncker

Tay Juncker is a Portland, Oregon-based graphic designer with more than 20 years of experience. Tay specializes in illustration and layout for magazines.
